SUMMARY:Ric Sheffield — Whistling Dixie: Ohio’s History of Resistance to the Black Vote
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Service — 10:30 a.m. \nLeader — Brian Moore \nSpeaker — Ric Sheffield \nTitle — Whistling Dixie: Ohio’s History of Resistance to the Black Vote \nTopic — FALSE PROMISES: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in 1800’s Ohio\nWhat it truly means to be a “citizen” is a question that African Americans have struggled with for generations. It often was much more than just personal dignity at stake. The right to vote was key to full citizenship for Black men in Ohio. Since the 1860s\, they were willing to risk everything to exercise the elective franchise and refused to be denied at the polls. Even the passage of a voting rights amendment to the Constitution amounted to no more than a false promise.\nFalse Promises is a collection of stories of courage and resolve as Black men tried to exercise their rights as citizens in late-1800s Ohio\, a state thought to be less antagonistic to racial equality in the Reconstruction era. These men\, however\, met resistance in nearly every corner of the state. It was particularly virulent in the rural counties in southern Ohio. Over decades\, the state slowly began to dismantle barriers to the Black vote. Much of the change was the consequence of brave African Americans willing to risk it all to challenge the denial of the right to vote. These stories reveal how contemporary voter-suppression tactics have roots in Ohio’s history of resistance to universal suffrage and challenge the perception that voting rights injustices\nwere solely confined to the South. \nBio — Ric S. Sheffield is Professor Emeritus of Legal Studies and Sociology at Kenyon College\, where he directed the Law & Society Program and the John Adams Summer Legal Scholars Program. \nBefore joining Kenyon\, he served for ten years as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio. He began his legal career as a civil rights attorney\, handling primarily sex and race discrimination cases\, and later served as chief attorney for the state’s consumer protection division. \nHis research and writing have explored the intersection of law with race\, gender\, and ethnicity\, with particular attention to the African American experience in rural Ohio. He has also been selected as a speaker with the Ohio Humanities Council’s speakers bureau\, lecturing widely on issues of race\, law\, and rural diversity. \nIn addition to publishing articles\, reviews\, and book chapters on legal history and African American social and legal history\, he is the author of We Got By: A Black Family’s Journey in the Heartland and False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in 1800s Ohio. \nA graduate of Case Western Reserve University\, where he studied sociology and law\, Professor Sheffield also served in a number of leadership roles at Kenyon\, including department chair and associate provost. \nJoin us downstairs after service for coffee and conversation. \nMasks are optional in the building\, and we fully support individuals’ choices regarding their use.

Let go of wondering about doing the right thing. Release the what-ifs and all your goals for the future\, replacing them of this instant. He and his wife\, Jacqueline\, are celebrating 32 years of marriage and embracing life in their 60s. Their home is shared with two cats\, two dogs\, and a vibrant aquarium and pond boasting more than 35 fish. Proud parents of two grown children and grandparents to three grandchildren\, Brian and Jacqueline find deep joy in family and music\, performing together in the trio Tao Bridge. \nFor four decades\, they have been the dedicated proprietors of Mid-Ohio Supply Co.\, embodying commitment and entrepreneurial spirit. Outside of work\, Brian’s passions include music\, gardening\, yard work\, and culinary adventures. SUMMARY:Joan Richmond — Where Do We Go From Here?
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Service — 10:30 a.m. \nLeader — Reed Richmond \nSpeaker — Joan Richmond \nTitle — Where Do We Go From Here? \nTopic — 204 years ago a circuit rider founded a faith community in Bellville\, Ohio\, planting a seed of Universalism as he traveled from Bellville to Lexington to Fredericktown to Mount Vernon and back\, generating a circuit of care that continues today. \nA few months ago\, our long-time pastor Will Humphrey took a post at East Shore UU Fellowship\, and left us a mission – in the period of transition\, he called on us to go on a new journey with a Vision Team whose job has been to ask the congregation – Who are we today? How has that seed sent out roots and stems into the community? How might we flower?\n\nSo we asked you\, the congregation\, to share with us your concerns and your hopes and dreams. We invited ministers and UUA officials to visit with us. We traveled to other UU churches in the area – Wooster\, Lewis Center\, North Royalton.\n\nNow time to share those ideas\, visions\, and dreams with you\, both large and small. Please join us as Vision Team Facilitator Joan Richmond shares the work of this inspired group\, including Jan Wheaton\, Jim Cooke\, Ryan Duncan\, Cristi Miller\, Nevaeh Frederick\, Jackie Moore\, and Tim Hicks. Through the alchemy of the individual and the community\, flame and the chalice\, the Unitarian Universalism of our spiritual tradition\, we hope to earn your trust and inspire our continuing UU journey.\n\nBio — Joan Richmond joined the All Souls congregation with her husband Reed in 2005. Born and raised on Bell Street\, she explored a variety of faiths\, from Texas back to Ohio\, before finding her way back to Bell Street. Joan serves as Board Secretary and teaches in the English department at Ohio State Mansfield\, closing in on 40 years of teaching. She and Reed also spent 15 years growing certified organic vegetables on Meadow Rise Farm.  Her husband Reed\, a retired health educator and writer\, have one daughter and son-in-law\, Catherine and Isaac\, two granddaughters\, Mariah and Alivia\, two white fuzzy dog beasts\, and one small\, lovely cat with a non-descript personality. \nJoin us downstairs after service for coffee and conversation. \nMasks are optional in the building\, and we fully support individuals’ choices regarding their use.

SUMMARY:Dr. Paul Robinson — Who and What Should We Remember?
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Service — 10:30 a.m. \nLeader — Jacqueline Moore \nSpeaker — Dr. Paul Robinson \nTitle — Who and What Should We Remember? \nTopic — Memorial Day is a sacred holiday\, a day we remember the lives of deceased loved ones and especially those who\, in the words of Lincoln\, gave their “last full measure of devotion.” We must not only remember our deceased\, we must also remember those who have touched our lives in so many ways over the course of our lives. Then we should never forget the lessons of history that could help prevent the loss of more lives. \nBio — Dr. Paul Robinson is a retired psychologist and NCSC professor where he taught for 24 years. He also was on the faculty at Oberlin College before moving back to the Mansfield area some 45 years ago. He was an avid bicyclist\, skier\, swimmer\, and hiker in his younger days. Now he works a small garden and tends to his property on Possum Run Road along with his wife of 64 years while still enjoying being with Mother Nature. \nJoin us downstairs after service for coffee and conversation. \nMasks are optional in the building\, and we fully support individuals’ choices regarding their use.
