SUMMARY:David FitzSimmons — Surviving a Tornado: My First Attempt
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Service — 10:30 a.m. \nLeader — Brian Moore \nSpeaker — David FitzSimmons \nTitle — Surviving a Tornado: My First Attempt \nTopic — In June 2022\, an F1 tornado hit our property\, damaging our house and parts of our business. To our family\, “surviving a tornado” doesn’t just mean making it through a short-duration storm; it means persevering through long-term effects: physical\, emotional\, and monetary. While sharing images of the damage\, I will discuss impacts the twister had—and continues to have—on our lives. I will delve into psychology\, celebrate community help\, and offer advice to others facing traumas. I subtitled this “My First Attempt” not only because it will be the first time publicly speaking about the storm but also because\, from a global warming perspective\, the odds may be increasing that this might not be my last time experiencing the effects of a tornado. \nBio — David FitzSimmons is an award-winning photographer and writer. His more than two dozen children’s books have sold over 5 million copies and received numerous awards\, including the IBPA’s best first picture book and best picture book. David’s books include Curious Critters\, Curious Critters Backyard Animals\, Curious Critters Marine\, Curious Critters Birds\, Curious Critters Raptors\, Curious Critters Dogs\, and numerous state-focused Curious Critters board books covering over one-third of the US (California\, Florida\, Georgia\, Illinois\, Indiana\, Maine\, Maryland\, Massachusetts\, Michigan\, Missouri\, New Jersey\, New York\, North Carolina\, Ohio\, Pennsylvania\, Texas\, and Virginia). He also authored Animals of Ohio’s Ponds and Vernal Pools\, Salamander Dance\, and Wakem the Rooster: Up All Night. Five Curious Critters books were featured in Chick-fil-A’s kid’s meals\, and David has licensed his books to Scholastic and PBS. His TV appearances include ABC\, NBC\, CBS\, FOX\, and The Weather Channel. David’s magazine credits include Outdoor Photographer\, Popular Photography\, Professional Photographer\, and Shutterbug\, among others. \nAn educator for twenty years\, David worked first as high school English teacher and then as a university professor\, having taught at Ashland University\, Ohio State University\, and Cornell University. He holds a Ph.D. in English from Ohio State\, with a specialty in narrative theory—investigating the components of storytelling—something that influences his photography and writing.  Regularly visiting schools\, David helps connect children with nature through writing and photography. He is an active leader in the Children & Nature movement. \nDavid presents seminars and workshops to a wide variety of audiences\, from public school\, college\, and university classes to photography groups\, nature clubs\, and civic organizations. His works have been exhibited at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute\, the National Center for Nature Photography\, the Palm Beach Photographic Centre\, and the Telluride Photo Festival. \nTo learn more about David and his award-winning picture books\, visit\nwww.curious-critters.com.\n\nJoin us downstairs after service for coffee and conversation. \nMasks are optional in the building\, and we fully support individuals’ choices regarding their use.

SUMMARY:Jen Gibson — Rising and Rooting: The Spirit of Easter and the Flower Communion
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Service — 10:30 a.m. \nFlower Communion \nDuring today’s service\, we will celebrate our Annual Flower Communion—a cherished tradition of beauty\, diversity\, and shared community. \nWe invite you to bring a single flower or a full bouquet to place on the altar. After a blessing\, you will be invited to come forward and receive a flower that you did not bring\, symbolizing our shared connection and the gifts we give and receive in community. \nThis simple yet meaningful ceremony honors the cycle of life\, renewal\, and the arrival of spring. Each flower\, unique in its own way\, reminds us of the beauty found in diversity and the strength of our gathered community. \nThe Flower Communion was created in 1923 by Rev. Norbert Čapek\, founder of the Unitarian Church in Prague\, Czechoslovakia. His wife\, Rev. Maja Čapek\, later introduced the tradition to the United States. Tragically\, Norbert Čapek lost his life in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II\, but his legacy of unity and peace lives on through this beloved ritual. \nWe hope you find meaning and joy in this time-honored tradition. \n\nLeader — Jen Gibson \nSpeaker — Jen Gibson \nTitle — Rising and Rooting: The Spirit of Easter and the Flower Communion \nTopic — A Unitarian Universalist reflection on personal growth\, community\, and the enduring power of shared ritual. This talk explores how the spirit of Easter and the legacy of the Flower Communion invite us to root ourselves in love\, rise into authenticity\, and bloom together in beloved community. \nBio — Jen Gibson is a member of All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church\, where she serves as both the Administrative Coordinator and a member of the Board as Trustee for Social Media\, Advertising\, and Growth. She also serves on the Board of the historic Universalist Herald magazine. Born and raised in the Mansfield area\, Jen still calls it home\, where she lives with her husband\, Rob\, their daughter\, Carolynn\, and their spirited cat\, Sirius Black. Raised Catholic\, Jen found her spiritual home at All Souls in 2017\, drawn to the church’s balance of humanist values and inclusive spiritual exploration. \nJoin us downstairs after service for coffee and conversation. \nMasks are optional in the building\, and we fully support individuals’ choices regarding their use.

SUMMARY:Dr. Paul Robinson — Through the Eyes of Extravagant Love
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Service — 10:30 a.m. \nLeader — Reed Richmond \nSpeaker — Dr. Paul Robinson \nTitle — Through the Eyes of Extravagant Love \nTopic —I dream of a world where there is no hate\, no prejudice. A world where we live in peace with each other. A world where all children and the elderly are loved and protected. A world where Everyone’s God-given worth is honored. A world where we celebrate uniqueness and differences. A world where there is no intentional hurt. I dream of a world where each and every person accepts the awesome responsibility of creating such a world. It starts with each one of us. Let’s stop dreaming about it and work to make it happen starting in our own families and our own community. The old song\, “What the world needs now is (extravagant) love…” is truer today than it was in 1965. And\, yes\, I am a dreamer. \nBio — Dr. Paul Robinson is a retired psychologist and NCSC professor where  he taught for 24 years. He also was on the faculty at Oberlin College before moving back to the Mansfield area some 45 years ago. He was an avid bicyclist\, skier\, swimmer\, and hiker in his younger days. Now he works a small garden and tends to his property on Possum Run Road along with his wife of 64 years while still enjoying being with Mother Nature. \nJoin us downstairs after service for coffee and conversation. \nMasks are optional in the building\, and we fully support individuals’ choices regarding their use.
