Bio —My name is Demrie Alonzo but my students call me Miss DD. I am an MLL teacher (multilingual language learner) for Mid-Ohio ESC. I’m also a licensed school counselor. I live in Shelby, Ohio and have a 21-year old son currently in his junior year at Ohio State. Although I became a teacher late in life, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. I am more than a teacher, but a liaison and advocate for my MLL students. I have been to my students’ homes to learn more about their cultures and get to know their families. I found out a family was in dire need when their father became deathly ill and they were living in a house that had no furnace, no kitchen, and in some places, no floors. I found resources to help them and was involved in the entire process. I also work closely with an immigrant family in my neighborhood, being their contact in the schools since their mother doesn’t speak English. Working with these wonderful people is my passion.
